Over the past term Year 3 have been learning about the Ancient Mayan civilisation. They have looked at Mayan numbers in Maths and had a go at solving problems using their numerical system. They have also learnt about their lifestyle and their beliefs. The children also made guacamole, salsa and tortillas using ingredients that the Mayans would have used in their cooking.
In November, the children had the opportunity to go and visit Ilfracombe’s Chocolate Emporium. They learnt about how the Mayans harvested cocoa beans and made chocolate. The children were intrigued to hear about the ingredients that are used in a variety of modern chocolates, and most importantly, they got to try them all! They also looked at the machinery used to make dark, milk and white chocolate and compared the differences between the three machines.
The children also were able to decorate their chocolate shapes with all their favourite toppings! Needless to say, the children in Year 3 had a great time.
